Top 10 Beaches of Kovalam

A town which has a lot of beaches and is located in the state of Kerala along the Arabian Sea is none other than the city of Kovalam. Renowned as an international beach destination with calm waters and crescent beaches, Kovalam has a glut of resorts along the beach side and a whole host of ayurvedic centers as well. It is known to be the favorite place of tourists who are in quest of relaxation, sun bathing and tranquility. The top 10 beaches of Kovalam are:

1. Kovalam Beach

This beach is located about 16 kms from Trivandrum city of South Kerala. Being an internationally prominent beach, it is flocked by thousands of people who visit here to have fun and splash in the water. Kovalam beach is divided into 3 portions and each is separated by rocky outcroppings. These 3 portions of beaches together form the shape of a crescent. The crescent shape of this beach is quite famous across the globe. This crescent beach is popular for a plethora of activities – sunbathing, swimming, body massages and other cultural programs & events are hosted here.

2. Pozhikkara Beach

A beautiful beach by sight, it is the meeting point of the backwaters of Kerala and the sea. The specialty of this beach is the lush greenery which is found along the coastline unlike any other beach. The picturesque beauty attracts thousands of tourists to enjoy the splendid beauty of nature. Pozhikkara beach is the perfect place for sunbathing and swimming. A number of food stalls are also available which dish out mouth watering sea food for the foodies.

3. Vizhinjam Beach

Another lovely attraction around Kovalam is the Vizhinjam Beach. It is extensively used by fishermen for catching fish. The main attraction of this beach are the 8th century rock cut caves. In olden times this beach was the largest port in the world.

4. Samudra Beach

Samudra beach is located in the northern part of Kovalam and has very less population. It is characterized by a calm and serene atmosphere which is very soothing to the soul. A large number of ayurveda centers are located here – so, now you know where to visit to get those special treatments. This beach is very mesmerizing in terms of beauty and a person feels mentally and physically very relaxed and at peace upon visiting it.

5. Chowara Beach

This beach is situated in the south part of Kovalam. It is around 18 kms away from the main Kovalam beach. This shore is quiet and less crowded when compared to other beaches. Mostly fishermen are found looking for catch here. If you are looking for some peace and calm, stroll down the Chowara beach and drown your feet in the cold sand for the most spectacular experience of tranquility.  You can find quite a few resorts and spa centers here owing to the serene atmosphere of this location.

6. Ashoka Beach

Ashoka beach is in continuation to the Samudra beach and is one of the most deserted and quiet beaches in Kovalam. A large number of ayurvedic centers are located here due to the calm and secluded atmosphere. This is the perfect place for a couple to heed out if they are looking to de-stress, rejuvenate and invigorate themselves.

7. Lighthouse Beach

Lighthouse beach is located in the southern part of Kovalam. The lighthouse in the beach is open for tourists every afternoon and on ascending the stairs of the lighthouse one can get an amazing bird eye’s view of the entire beach and its surroundings. The lighthouse is lit up during evenings which makes the sight look very beautiful against the dark backdrop of the blue waters.

8. Hawa Beach

Hawa beach is located in the middle of Samudra beach and Lighthouse beach. It is mostly used by the fishermen to catch their prey. One can capture scenic clicks of the fishermen with their nets in the boats in the middle of splashing waters. The tides are quite high here and hence swimming and other sports activities are prohibited.

9. Grove Beach

Grove beach is one of a kind and not only provides you with breathtaking views of the natural scenery but also relaxes and helps a person unwind from stress. A large number of tourists visit this beach to enjoy the sand and water and the breezy winds. A number of food stalls are present which serve tourist local delicacies of Kovalam.

10. Shanghumukham Beach

Shanghumukham beach is located in the west side of Thiruvananthapuram in Kovalam. Watching the sunset along the coast of the beach is truly a blissful experience. People love to come here and enjoy playing in the water and soak themselves in sun and sand.
