Top 7 Places to Visit in Devikulam

Situated in God’s own country; Kerala, Devikulam is a small hill station a little ahead of Munnar in Idukki district. Apart from being a quaint little town, Devikulam derives its name from legends. According to mythology, goddess Sita of the Ramayana took a bath in the Devikulam lake which is now known as the Sita Devi lake. Due to its place in Hindu mythology, the place attracts a lot or tourists who regard the water of the lake as sacred and pure. Along with its sacredness, the lake is also known for its medicinal properties. The place is also known for its greenery and tea plantations. As little a town as having only 350 people in 2010, Devikulam is abundant with places to visit, here are the top 7-

1. Mattupetty Lake

The Mattupetty Lake is considered as one of the main places to visit while you are in Devikulam. It is situated about 26km away from the main city but it is totally worth the travel. There are speed boats available at the lake for hire and the lake is surrounded by lush green forests and hillocks. It is a serene picturesque lakeside view, one that you shouldn’t miss at any cost!

2. Eravikulam National Park

The Eravikulam National Park is about 15km from Munnar and is spread over an area of around 97 sq.km. It was set up in 1978 to protect the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. The park was initially a sanctuary but was eventually made into a national park. Among other animals, one can find the Malabar civet, sambar deer and langurs in the park. The unique bird species found in the park are also magnificent.  Right in the middle of Mother Nature’s playground, the park is a respite from concrete jungles and brings you closer to the greenery around.

3. Sita Devi Lake

The famous Sita Devi Lake is also known as the Devikulam lake and one of the most popular tourist spots in the area. The lake is surrounded by trees and lush greenery making it a perfect picnic spot. Other than the mythological importance of the lake, the water is also said to have therapeutic powers and is said to be rich in minerals. The lake also allows fishing which makes it an ideal spot for a day out!

4. Keezharkuthu Falls

Keezharkuthu Falls are popularly known as rainbow falls and is one of the best places to visit in Devikulam. The rocks are at a height of about 1500m and the surrounding greenery is known to be the home of various medicinal and therapeutic plants. The area also hosts adventure sports like rock climbing and mountaineering that are a major tourist attraction.

5. Blossom International Park

This modern day adventure park is located in Munnar and has facilities like water cycling, roller skating and rides. The park attracts a lot of children as there are tree-houses here as well as ropeways and rides. The park is accessible at the payment of a nominal fee and is totally worth it as it guarantees a fun-filled day for you and your family!

6. Kundala Lake

Located right in the middle of a thick forest, the Kundala Lake is close to the Kundala Arch dam. The lake is popular among tourists because it has boating facilities and offers a variety of boats to choose from like pedal boats, shikaras and rowing boats. There are gardens around that have beautiful flowers where pictures are taken. There is also a waterfall nearby that tourists can visit after a few hours of boating.

7. Thoovanam Falls

Thoovanam Falls is located inside the Chinnar wildlife sanctuary and has water flowing from the river Pambar that goes through the entire reserve. The sanctuary is not open to tourists all year round but the falls are. The waterfalls can be reached via a trekking trek that provides an opportunity to witness wildlife at its natural best.
