Rajasthan is a place which is visited for its beautiful, intricate palaces and lush, royal heritage. Beneath this glamorous history, lie some terrifying tales of horror and gore which can scare us deep down within. Let’s go through the top ten haunted places in Rajasthan and the stories behind them, which the faint-hearted must definitely steer clear from.

1. Bhangarh Fort

The spookiness and horror surrounding this place is seen to the extent that there is an official board ordering visitors to clear the area as night approaches. Located in Alwar, this desolate fort is present next to a thick forest. The curse on Bhangarh Fort is attributed to a magician who was killed by the beautiful princess whom he madly wanted. The princess apparently saw through his plan of tricking her into loving him and killed him, but not before he cursed the fort where she resided.

2. Brij Raj Bhavan

A beautiful residential hotel with a stunning view in Kota, the Brij Raj Bhavan has a dark history to it. This hotel is said to be haunted by the ghost of Major Charles Burton who was killed along with his two sons by the Indian soldiers mutinying against the British rule. Though he doesn’t seem to affect the number and experience of guests staying at the hotel, some guests and staff have talked about hearing some orders being meted out and some slapping around of dozing security staff.

Looked after as an archaeological site, this forlorn town of Kuldhara in Jaisalmer is yet another place which is said to be haunted. This once flourishing settlement is said to have been deserted by its residents, after the scheming prime minister threatened the villagers to face dire consequences if they did not hand over the daughter of their chief whom he lusted after. In the process the residents are believed to have cursed the land and the minister. The effectiveness of the curse is seen prevalent in the deserted and eerie atmosphere till date.

4. Nahargarh Fort

This majestic fort, overlooking the Pink City. Nahargarh Fort is located on the Aravalli Hills. Built by the royal, Nahar Singh, this marvelous piece of work is said to have mesmerized him to such an extent that he guards over the place even after his death. It is widely believed that he disrupts any kind of construction activity around the area and protects it from all sorts of dismemberment. The love of the master over his masterpiece is truly haunting.

5. Jagatpura

The locality of Jagatpura in Jaipur is famous for its witches who are witnessed by passersby in the dead of the night. Unlike other spooky places, this locality is a fully residential area which is said to experience eerie sightings once the sun sets. Residents maintain that the witches do roam about in their white attire, making them highly hesitant to step outside once darkness sets in.

6. Delhi Jaipur Road

Just some distance before Jaipur, a dhaba which is believed to be haunted appears. The haunting is said to take place by a young woman who passed away in a car accident. The ghost of this woman is said to roam around the area, and then disappear once passing cars stop to inspect her. Drivers around Delhi Jaipur Road should be on the lookout for this well dressed soul.

7. Rana Kumbha Palace

Amidst much controversy around the movie Padmavati, Rana Kumbha Palace was the residence of the Rani in Chittorgarh is also a spot of horrifying history and eerie sightings. The Rani Padmini is believed to have set herself upon fire along with hundreds of her followers, when Sultan Alauddin Khilji tried to attack their residence. The cries of the ladies for help are said to be heard from time to time by people around the area.

8. Chand Baori

Chand Baori is a marvelous piece of architecture in the village of Abhaneri, near Jaipur. The 3500 steps, located over 13 stories, are said to be watched over by a djinn who does not allow any visitor to climb back up the same way that they used to climb down the structure. The silence of the area, broken by the bats and pigeons frequenting it, is another experience in itself.

9. Sudhabay

Situated near Pushkar, this place is widely known for the ‘Ghost Fair’ which is conducted in it. The mixture of strange rituals of exorcism performed on people who have come to get rid of the evil spirits around them is definitely uncanny. The well water in the area is believed to have powers to drive away the evil spirits residing in those who dip in the water. The strange atmosphere of Sudhabay is a definite hair-raising experience.

10. Kiradu Temple

Situated at a distance of about 30 kilometers from Barmer, the five temples of Kiradu have marvelous Solanki architecture. This stunning location is found to be deserted due to its spine-chilling curse. The curse is said to be the wrath of a sage whose followers were neglected by the residents. The only person who looked after them was a potter’s wife, who did not heed the sage’s order of leaving without turning around and thus was turned to stone the moment she looked back at her hometown.

Rajasthan with its motley of culture, stories, royalty and heritage is one place where there is no dearth of unearthly tales and places having an abnormal hold over the population.
