Panchmarhi owes its name to these caves. Panchmarhi means pach marhi which translates to five caves in English. They are actually five rock-cut cave temples dedicated to the five Pandavas. It is believed that during their exile, the Pandavas made these caves their home for years. The caves are believed be more than a thousand year old. There is also a beautiful garden in front. The beauty of the garden and the structure which has both mythological and religious significance make the Pandava caves a popular tourist destination of the state.
