Location : Sariska is located in Rajasthan, close to Alwar. The town is located at a distance of 100 km from Jaipur, 200 km from Delhi and 21 km from Alwar.

Climate : The climate of Sariska is extreme. During summers (April-June), the temperature reaches to a maximum of 46ºC, while in winters it drops down to a minimum of 0ºC. The rainy season falls between July and August.

Best Time to Travel : The best time to travel Sariska is during winters from October to March.


Sariska - The Erstwhile Hunting Preserve of Rajputs
Sariska, formerly known as Mewat, was an ancient state of the Rajputs. The people of Rajput state did not accept any external interferences, but in the late 13th century, Sultan Bulban suppressed them and brought the area under Muslim rule. In the year 1771, Maharaja Pratap Singh, a Kucchwaha Rajput, won back Alwar and founded the town in his own way. Set in a picturesque valley of the Aravalli hills, Sariska is famous for the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. Sariska was the erstwhile royal preserve of the rulers of Alwar and became a sanctuary in 1958. The wildlife sanctuary came under the Project Tiger in 1979 and became a national park in the year 1982. Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over an area of 866 sq.kms with a core area of around 474 sq. km. The wildlife sanctuary is home to a large number of flora and fauna. Tigers are the major attraction of this park, other carnivores are jungle cat, leopard, jackal and hyena. The park also houses other animals like the hare, chital, sambar, wild boar, umpteen porcupines and nilgai. The bird population includes pea fowl, quail, sand grouse, gray partridge, tree pie, white breasted kingfisher, crested serpent eagle, horned owl and golden - backed woodpecker.


Travel Attractions of Sariska
Sariska PalaceThe Kankwari Fort : Located close to the park, the Kankwari Fort is the place where Mughal emperor Aurangzeb once imprisoned his brother Dara Shikoh. The incident happened in the 17th century, when they were fighting for succession of the Mughal throne.

The Ancient Shiva Neelkanth Temples : The temples date back between the 6th and13th century A.D. and are situated within the park area. These temples attract a large number of visitors.

The Sariska Palace : The picturesque palace was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the honour of the Duke of Edinburgh, who visited the sanctuary. The palace complex built in the year 1902 is now converted into a hotel.

Siliserh Lake Palace Hotel : The magnificent royal palace was built by Maharaja Vinay Singh in 1845 for his queen Shila. Nestled amidst the beautiful landscape of wooded hills, the palace is now converted as the Lake Palace Hotel and offers boating and sailing facilities.


Excursions
Jai Samand Lake : Located at a distance of 6 kms from the city, Jaisamand Lake is a popular spot for outings and picnics. The artificial lake was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1910. Jai Samand Lake is also ideal for water sports.

Vijay Mandir Palace : 10 km away from Sariska, the Vijay Mandir Palace was built by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1918. The Palace overlooking a beautiful lake offers a fascinating sight. The Sita Ram Temple inside the palace attracts a large number of devotees, especially during Ramnavmi.

By Air : Jaipur Airport (100 km) is the nearest airport. The Airlines operate flights from major cities of India to Jaipur.

By Rail : Alwar (22 km) is the nearest railway station. The railway station is connected to important places in Rajasthan and other places of India.

By Road : Sariska is connected by good roads with important places of Rajasthan. Regual bus service connects Alwar with Delhi and other cities of Rajasthan.
