Jaipur - A Fantasy In Pink
Jaipur, the picturesque city of Rajasthan is popularly known as the Pink City. Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727 A.D, Jaipur owes its name from the emperor. Sawai Jai Singh was a great warrior and astronomer and he had good relations with Mughals. In 1727, the king moved down from the rugged hills of Amber and laid out the city in the Shilpa-Shashtra, an ancient Hindu treatise on architecture. The ancient walled 'pink city' still has fairytale palaces, rugged fortresses perched on barren hills and broad avenues. Inspite of a bustling capital city, Jaipur still retains its old character and history. Today, Jaipur is known as the city of history and culture, forts and palaces, golden sands and a harmony which is quite remarkable. Besides the exquisite temples, marvellous gardens and colourful bazaar selling trinkets and handlooms provide a timeless appeal to Jaipur.
