North Goa comprises the capital Panjim, Fort Aguada, Candolim, Chapora, Vagator and the beaches Anjuna, Baga and Calagute. South Goa includes Vasco-da-Gama and the beaches Bogmalo, Colva, Margao and Benolem. The small former Portuguese colony is now known all over the world for its silver sands and golden beaches. Millions of visitors are drawn to Goa's lush mountains and cool sea waters, churches and coconut groves, spice plantations and paddy fields and its warm and freindly people. Moreover, Goa's easy going, relaxed life conjures up the charm to make the state one of India's favourite tourist destinations.

Major Attractions
Goa CarnivalPanajim ( Panji ) : Panaji, the state capital is situated on the south bank of the river Mandovi. The town became the capital of Goa in 1843, and has preserved its Portugues heritage remarkably well in its narrow winding streets, old houses with overhanging balconies dating fron the 16th and 17th centuries, red-tiled roofs and small bars and cafes. Major attractions of the town include the old Church of the Immaculate Conception, built on the hillside, the Secretariat and the Institute Menezes Braganza.

Old Goa : Located 9 km east of Panjim, Old Goa is main attraction for tourists visiting Goa.

Old Goa was a thriving and prosperous city even before the arrival of the Portuguese and was the second capital of the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur. Founded by Alfonso de Albuquerque in 1510, Old Goa remained the state capital until 1843. Today, the town has a number of structures belonging to the Portuguese period. Old Goa houses several Portuguese churches that include Se Cahtedral, Church of St Francis of Assisi and Church of St. Cajetan.

Margao (Madgaon) : Margao is the main centre of Southern Goa and a beautiful provinicial town. The old stuructures of the town display many reminders of its Portuguese past. Though the town has not many places of tourist's interest, old Maragao church and the covered market are worth a visit.

The Beaches : Goa is famous for its beaches since early 1960s. Goan beaches have a unique magical charm and travellers find them extremely difficult to leave. Famous Goan beaches include the Colva Beach, Anjuna Beach, Arambol Beach, Chapora Beach, Vagator Beach, Calangute and Baga Beach, Bogmalo Beach and Palolem Beach.

Portuguese FortsGoa Carnival : The annual fesitval is celebrated in the month of February. The three-day festival is the most important festival in Goa. Apart from local people, tourists across the globe visit the state to participate in the festival.

Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary : Situated in the foothills of the Western Ghats, the sanctuary is a good place to see sambar, wild boar and other animals.

Temples : Most of the Hindu temples of interest are located close to Ponda, on the route between Panaji and Margao. The Shiva temple of Shri Mangesh is situated at Priol-Ponda Taluka, about 22 kms from Panaji. Just one km further down the road is the Shri Mahala temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Shri Ramanath, Shri Mahalakshmi and Shri Shantadurga temple are other important temples at Ponda.

Forts : Goa is dotted with many old Portuguese forts, most of them are in the coastal areas. Most of the forts are in a reasonable state of preservation and are worth a visit.
