Ayurveda In India
Ayurveda started more than 5000 years
ago in India. There are glimpses of Ayurvedic treatments and medicines in
various ancient scripts. The word Ayurveda is derived from two words - Ayu
meaning life and Veda meaning knowledge or science. It literally means
knowledge of life. However, "life" has a broad meaning in the
Ayurvedic context. Human life is considered to have four dimensions -
physical, mental, sensorial, and spiritual. Living a healthy and balanced
life must therefore take into account more than just the physical body.
According to Ayurveda, to be "healthy" is not only the absence of disease. It is the state of balanced functioning of all aspects of the human body, including the mind and soul. These are equally important pillars of health. In this regard, Ayurveda can be considered to be the original "mind-body" medical system.
Over
the last millennia human beings - above all in the West - have lost their
relationship to their "inner intelligence" that guides everything,
balances everything. Ayurveda helps one to hear one's inner voice, to
rediscover the natural rhythm within oneself and to allow it to take effect,
and to feel once more the unity that we are all born with. According to
Ayurveda, the causes of illnesses result from a lack in the equilibrium of
all our vital energies. Ayurveda leads us back to the point where we can
better comprehend our bodies, spirit and souls. In this way we regain the
ideal state that nature invested us with.

Yoga In India
Yoga is an ancient Indian practice,
equally as old as Ayurveda. It is a scientific system designed to bring the
practitioners health, happiness, and a greater sense of Self. In Yoga, the
body and mind are linked to create a state of internal peacefulness and
integration, bringing the individual from a state of separation to a
self-unity that is flexible, accepting and whole. At the practical level,
and included in the contemporary definitions of Yoga, are the actual
physiological/mental techniques themselves. These techniques concentrate on
posture and alignment, as well as creating a higher consciousness. Yoga
utilizes stretching postures, breathing, and meditation techniques to calm
the emotional state and the mind, and tone the body. The main Aim of Yoga is
the attainment of the physical and mental health. The most famous and
practised stages of Yoga discipline are:
- Asanas - Physical postures or exercises (most famous Yoga Practise)
- Dhyana- Meditation (second most important and famous Yoga Practise)
- Niyamas (observances) - austerities, purity, contentment, study, surrender of the ego
- Pranayama - Control of vital energy (Breathing control)
